Hope on the Ropes | Dr. Jonathan Lee Walton
*Hope on the Ropes | Dr. Jonathan Lee Walton | Abyssinian Baptist Church 217th Anniversary* In this powerful sermon preached at Abyssinian Baptist Church's 217th Anniversary celebration, Dr. Jonathan Lee Walton, President of Princeton Theological Seminary, delivers a stirring message about hope, resilience, and the enduring power of black institutions in America. Drawing from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17, Dr. Walton examines the historic role of the black church as the "moral conscience of this nation"—not merely a thermometer recording the temperature of the times, but a thermostat that resets the climate when the nation burns with hubris or freezes in callous indifference. Through compelling historical analysis, Dr. Walton revisits W.E.B. Du Bois's 1897 critique of the "Negro church" and demonstrates how the very institutions academics dismissed became the most enduring engines of progress. He celebrates the black women who turned church basements into "sacred laboratories of liberation" and the HBCUs that continue to produce extraordinary results despite representing only 3% of all colleges. In times of weariness and uncertainty, Dr. Walton reminds us that hope—even when it feels like it's on the ropes—remains the church's greatest inheritance and most endangered treasure. This sermon is a clarion call to recommit to our institutions, resist moral amnesia, and remember that when black institutions are strong, this nation is strong. *Key Themes:* • The historic role of the black church in American society • Hope as resilience in the face of resistance • The power and importance of black institutions • Standing firm against false gods of fleeting power • The legacy of Abyssinian Baptist Church *Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17* *About the Speaker:* Dr. Jonathan Lee Walton is the President and Professor of Christian Ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary. A Morehouse College alumnus (Class of 1996) and acclaimed preacher, Dr. Walton brings prophetic witness and scholarly depth to contemporary issues of faith, justice, and social transformation. *About Abyssinian Baptist Church:* Founded in 1808, Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York, stands as one of America's most historic and influential congregations. Under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Johnson, Abyssinian continues its 217-year legacy of prophetic preaching, community service, and moral leadership. --- 🔔 Subscribe to stay connected with Abyssinian Baptist Church 👍 Like this video if this message blessed you 💬 Share your thoughts in the comments below 🔗 Share this sermon with someone who needs encouragement -- Tithes and Offerings: https://www.abyssinian.org/give Text ABY to 81000 to give View the bulletin: https://abyssinian.org/bulletin/ -- #AbyssinianBaptistChurch #DrJonathanLeeWalton #HopeOnTheRopes #BlackChurch #ChurchAnniversary #Sermon #ChristianPreaching #Faith #Hope #BlackInstitutions #Harlem #PrincetonSeminary #ComeHometoAbyssinian #KeeptheFaith #AbyssinianBaptist #SocialJustice #FaithInActionPrayer
